About Our Pet Names

Where 5,000+ curated names come from, how trending data works, and how we keep everything accurate and up to date.

Who Curates These Collections?

Petto Pet Names is built by the team at Petto Health, a pet-health platform dedicated to helping pet owners make confident, informed decisions — starting from the moment they choose a name.

Our editorial team manually reviews every themed collection — from classic dog names to mythology, pop culture, and seasonal picks — to ensure each name is spelt correctly, appropriate, and genuinely useful. Collections are seeded from a combination of industry reference data, community suggestions, and original research, then reviewed before publication.

Where Does Trending Data Come From?

Trending names are derived exclusively from real Petto Health user interactions — not scraped from other websites or fabricated from popularity guesses. Every time a pet owner shortlists a name, shares it with friends, or includes it in a voting poll on this site, that interaction is recorded.

Interactions are aggregated on a weekly basis. The weekly trending list reflects the names that received the highest engagement during the most recent seven-day window.

Because the data comes from a live pet-owner community, it reflects what real people are actually considering for their pets right now — not what was popular five years ago.

What Counts as an Interaction?

  • Shortlisting — saving a name to a personal shortlist within the Petto Health app
  • Sharing — generating a shareable name card to send to friends or family
  • Poll voting — casting a vote for a name in a community or personal naming poll

How Are New Names Added?

New names go through a two-stage process. First, candidates are sourced — from user suggestions, cultural references, etymological research, or emerging naming trends. Second, each candidate is reviewed by an editor for spelling, appropriateness, and fit within its collection.

If you've spotted a name that's missing, offensive, or mis-spelt, you can flag it using the “Suggest a name” link in the footer of any page. We review all submissions and publish updates regularly.
